Introducing Keepers Cottage

Keepers Cottage is a gentle and sophisticated scheme.

A generous family detached home, the property required staging for sale by the builder Lucy Developments. My team and I set about curating a design that would connect with the property's rural and exclusive setting.

Set in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, the small gated development of aspirational homes offers rural living with contemporary accommodation and family-friendly layouts.

This room is this home's principal formal living space. It adjoins the dining room and has dual-aspect views to the rear and front of the property.

The Inspiration

The rural setting of the home, the rolling Chiltern hills and gentility of the gated development offered much inspiration for our scheme. Starting as we always do, our 9 squares of images narrated a visual story of a gentle lifestyle, deep earthy tones and patenas inspired by nature.

The Elements

The function of the space is principly a place to gather and hold conversations. A room in which to relax together or alone with the Sunday papers. The provision of a log burner made for a focus point in the room.

Pulling the furniture into the middle of the space creates a sense of place and created an intimate sitting zone. This frees up the circulation route around the room, making the dining room feel more connected.

The large oversized Rothco-inspired artwork facilitated the colour scheme, offering a range of deep umbers and aubergines. This flowed through to the fabric selection. Full pleated umber curtains sit at the window, and a tan leather ottoman provides contrast to the heather and plum tones of the seating. Textures of linen, velvets and stone work alongside lined oak. The oversized lighting adds drama and structure. Centralising the seating through a pendant chandelier and creating boundaries with lamps and staging artwork with wall lights. Using consistent metal finishes creates visual cohesion across the space.

On a Final Note

Keepers cottage, is a space that is warm and cosy.

We aimed to deliver a scheme which felt gentle but sophisticated. The deep, warm and earthy tones were set with simple block prints to create an unfussy but modern look.

Clashing geometric patterns and mixed textures provide a depth to the scheme. Oversized artwork and zoned seating create a sense of place in a potentially disjointed room, where all four walls are broken with windows or doors etc.
